How to Balance Your Diet
Planning meals for a large family is not a simple task. It is an important job and a real responsibility. Naturally you want to serve meals that are tasty and appetizing. Yet at the same time you must keep within your budget. All this requires skill and careful planning.
It takes a combination of different foods to keep the body in good working order. A well- planned diet will provide the materials needed for the growth and repair of body tissues. It will enable the body to produce its own enzymes and hormones, which in turn will regulate all the other vital activities of life. At the same time there must be sufficient bulk in the diet to regulate the digestive processes and keep the system functioning normally.
Poor habits of eating are the cause of much malnutrition in the world today. This is particularly true in the case of adolescents and young adults. Many of them are trying to subsist on totally inadequate diets. They are spending their money unwisely and suffering the consequences of their folly. Many who are victims of chronic colds and frequent bouts of influenza are among this group. Such people often need more vitamin C. When their diets regularly include an abundance of citrus fruits and fruit juices, as well as tomatoes and fresh vegetables, they often find that they are free from colds and respiratory infections.
These fresh fruits and vegetables not only contain this important vitamin but in other ways are real aids to beauty. Through their internal reactions they cleanse and beautify the skin. The whole body improves. Women who are pregnant need to be even more careful to take enough fresh fruits and vegetables in their diets. Recent scientific observations indicate that the unborn baby draws heavily on the vitamins in his mother’s blood stream, particularly vitamin C. Women who are low in vitamin C are more likely to suffer from hemorrhages and miscarriages.
This question of diet is highly important at any time of life. What we have said merely illustrates the need for living on a balanced diet. It is never too late to change for the better. Even those who are older can always benefit. They can improve their eating habits and make their days happier and perhaps freer from pain.
