Creating a cleansing Health Dieting, Purify Your Body with Fresh Vegetables and Fruits
Understanding the principles of a health enhancing, cleansing diet will allow you to create the optimal diet for your needs. Follow the basic principles, and listen to your body. People vary in their dietary needs and preferences. For example, some people thrive on a primarily vegetarian diet, while others need animal protein daily to stay healthy. Be flexible and open to the messages that your body gives to you. The basic components of a detoxifying diet are fruits and vegetables, complex carbohydrates, lean proteins, and healthful oils. Each aspect is discussed in detail below.
Fresh, organic vegetables and fruits are the primary components of a cleansing diet. They provide an abundance of vitamins and minerals as well as important phytonutrients that prevent cancer, heart disease, glaucoma, arthritis, and all other degenerative diseases. The soluble fiber in fresh fruits and vegetables cleanses the intestinal tract and arteries. Dark, leafy green vegetables such as watercress, romaine lettuce, and mustard greens are abundant in chlorophyll, which has natural detoxifying and cell-protective benefits. Deep orange and yellow vegetables and fruits and dark leafy greens contain powerful antioxidant vitamins that assist your body in neutralizing harmful free radicals and provide protection against cancer and other degenerative diseases. Sulfur-rich vegetables such as onions and garlic help to remove heavy metals from the body, and the cruciferous family, which includes broccoli, cabbage, and kale, blocks the formation of cancer-causing substances. In addition, fresh fruits and vegetables help to reduce excess acidity and bring the body into a healthy alkaline state.
Make it a goal to eat at least 5 servings of vegetables and .2 to 3 fruits daily. Increasing your intake of fresh produce is one of the most important dietary changes you can make. In general, consider 1/2 cup of cooked or raw vegetables, 1 cup of raw leafy greens,1/2 cup or 1 piece of fresh fruit, or 1 cup of fresh vegetable or fruit juice as a serving. Vegetables and fruits with the deepest, richest colors are the best sources of protective antioxidants. For example, choose dark leafy greens over pale lettuces, and purple grapes over green grapes. Eat a variety of fruits and vegetables to obtain a wide range of protective nutrients, and eat them both both raw and cooked. While raw foods generally have the highest concentrations of antioxidants, some nutrients, like beta carotene, are most readily absorbed when vegetables are lightly cooked. Cook them so that they still have some crunch—and life force—left. Steaming, blanching, stir frying, and grilling are good cooking methods for preserving vital nutrients.
Although 5 servings of vegetables may sound like a lot, it’s really not. For example, a mixed leafy green salad at lunch with marinated beans or a cup of bean and vegetable soup, a handful of raw baby carrots or a cup of carrot juice as a snack, and a baked potato and steamed broccoli at dinner provides 5 servings of vegetables. Don’t limit yourself to 5 servings? Be creative and see how many vegetables you can eat in a day. I think of vegetables as the centerpiece of my diet, and try to make every lunch and dinner composed of at least 50 percent vegetables. You can’t overdose on vegetables—every bite saturates your cells with health-protective nutrients.
In addition to eating at least 5 servings of vegetables daily, eat 2 to 3 servings of fresh fruits every day. As with vegetables, seek out the best and freshest organic fruits. Fruits provide natural, satisfying sweetness and are also the most purifying foods. They are quickly digested and have a natural laxative effect which cleanses the intestinal tract. Fresh fruit is an excellent way to begin the day and makes an ideal snack. Many people find that fruits are most easily digested when eaten in between meals. When eaten with meals, fruits—especially melons—tend to cause gas and bloating. Experiment and find out what works best for you.
