How do you feel being Overweighed?
We can only make changes when we are really ready. If your weight is not a problem for you and you’re not unhappy about it, wait until you are. Maybe your mother nags you about it, your little sister teases you, and the relatives make well-meaning comments. You think you should do something, but for some reason you’re just not motivated. Then wait. Don’t lose weight for anyone but yourself. When the decision is yours, the process will come easier. In fact, if you are not ready for the commitment, it just won’t work.
How do you feel about your weight? Even if you think it is not worth dwelling on, do this exercise. Be honest. You may find out something about yourself. I’ll start you out with comments I’ve heard from other teenagers, then you fill in your own thoughts. I’ve heard many teenagers say: I feel
- ugly: I can’t wear the latest styles, and the clothes I do wear look sloppy
- self-conscious: I don’t fit in with the other kids
- embarrassed: I hate going to parties or going shopping with friends because they all look better than me
- angry: my mother tells me not to eat fattening things and then she brings them home
- envious: my best friend is a stick
- frustrated: I want to lose weight, but I want to eat with my friends and have fun too
- insecure: people talk about me and think I’m fat
- bad: the boys don’t ask me out
If you could close your eyes and magically lose that layer of fat, how would you feel? How would your life change? What would you wear? What would you be doing with your friends? Where might you go? How would life be different? Close your eyes and picture yourself the way you want to look. Is it hard? Keep trying. Glance at the following list if you want some ideas, then write down the way you see your ideal self.
If I were at my goal weight, I would be:
- Looking good
- Feeling good about myself
- Confident
- Popular
- Going out all the time
- Wearing fabulous clothes
- Dating every night
- Showing off my body, not covering it up
- Friendlier
- Now it’s your turn.
