A Wholesome American Restaurant, Restaurant and Dieting
Open Carb. Now it gets really easy. American restaurants always have a variety of vegetables, potatoes, bread, salads, and desserts.
Open Protein. A big choice of unadulterated meats, fowl, and fish. Just make sure you eat right along with everyone else, and if you want three different items, you might want to select all of them or two of them from among the entrees.
We must not make restaurants a big problem. They aren’t. They are much easier than parties or banquets. Nothing will appear on your plate to tempt you that you didn’t specifically order. Your selection is immense. I have yet to find a restaurant that didn’t offer Combiners a happy choice. Plus, restaurants exist to serve you, the customer. They are there to cater to your food needs. If you’re gracious and explain what you’re doing, you’ll convert even the most snarly waiter.
Restaurants will always be a part of your life. Now is the time to put them into perspective. Don’t let them interfere with your skinniness. It’s so unnecessary. It’s so self-defeating.
One of the biggest difficulties is deciding which way to go— Open Carb or Open Protein. Remind yourself that nothing is leaving the planet. This isn’t a last-supper decision. The restaurant is not burning down. If the choice is that tough, go back tomorrow and eat what you are passing up today. You’re not going to be hungry. You’re not going to be deprived. You tomorrow, and eat what you are passing up today. You ‘re not going to be bored.
Alan and Jack, two of my friends, ate at The Palm at least twice a week. Yet every time Jack went, he crammed it all in— potatoes, onions, bread and butter, steak, lobster, and cheesecake. I couldn’t make him acknowledge that The Palm was a regular part of his life. In the six weeks he came to see me, he went there fourteen times. Each time he had to have it all. Obviously, he had suppressed his skinny voice. Alan, on the other hand, ate potatoes and onions one time, steak and lobster another. Not only did he not feel deprived or go hungry, but he developed a new body in the process—one that was twenty-seven pounds lighter. Need I add, Jack was not one of my success stories.
If you let that skinny voice take over, eating out can be a joy—untained by the guilt that comes from gorging.
Another client tells of his first trip to New York City as a Combiner. He ate at his favorite restaurant, a restaurant that had always epitomized the ultimate in dining to him. “I enjoyed ordering my meal and finishing it, and—for the first time in my life—stopping when I was full,” he said. “After all that time, all those meals of shoveling it in, I realized inside that it wasn’t leaving the planet. I could go there again tomorrow. It was the first time it had ever happened. And then to go home and find I hadn’t gained one ounce!”
As still another client points out, “I have given myself permission to enjoy eating out. I don’t have to go off in a corner and eat anymore. I can now eat openly. I used to get only half the enjoyment I now get out of a restaurant.”
Restaurants are a regular part of your life. You don’t have to eat everything each time you go.
They will not all burn down. And they are there to serve you.
