Beware of the eye—mouth gap
Ask someone what they ate yesterday and chances are they’ll under-estimate the amount. This phenomenon, called the `eye-mouth gap’, has been the glitch in many studies which have set out to examine just how much fat people eat.
People systematically understate the amounts of all nutrients they’re eating, but they particularly under-report fat and carbohydrates.
Danish researchers asked middle-aged men and women about their exercise and eating habits and then compared their reported food intake with actual biological measures.
The results showed that people systematically understate the amounts of all nutrients they’re eating, but particularly under-report fat and carbohydrates. Other work has suggested that the whole foods being understated tend to be the snack and fast food items.
Experts in this type of research believe that under-reporting is not a deliberate deception, but the unconscious result of social pressures to which everyone appears to be susceptible to varying degrees. The important thing is to be aware of how much food you put on your plate. An eating diary might come in handy, at least for a while, to check serving sizes and those times when memory fails.
