Calorie-restricted diets don’t work. First, they leave you hungry, so there is always an internal battle going on as to whether you stay on the diet or not. Secondly, they don’t correct the underlying metabolic imbalances in your body that have caused you to store fat in your tissues. These stores have probably developed over a lifetime of eating a high-carbohydrate diet – especially the wrong kind of dense, refined carbohydrates. Read the rest of this entry »

Because your body is genetically programmed to move, not getting enough physical activity carries a heavy price tag in terms of health, energy, emotional balance and looks. And if you have avoided physical activity as much as possible for many years, the good news is it’s never too late to reap its benefits. Read the rest of this entry »

For many years I wondered why after childhood most of us no longer experience that glorious explosive, rhythmical freedom and energy, grounded in the physical body. Why do we often feel only half alive?
And why do us women tend to look upon our bodies as something separate from ourselves, to be criticised, judged, or pushed and shoved into shape, instead of celebrated for their power and joy in movement. For too many human beings, the primary experience of life is one of lifelessness. And since none of us is able to live with this dead feeling for long, we are forced to seek extreme stimuli – drugs, alcohol, compulsive work or sex – just to make us feel alive again. The trouble is, none of these ever seems to work for very long. Where does the real key lie? Read the rest of this entry »

Did you ever begin a weight loss diet only to discover you were overcome by chronic fatigue and constant hunger? This is probably because you were following a low-fat regime. Low-fat diets are notorious for being virtually impossible to keep to for long, since low- fat foods just do not satisfy. These diets can also be dangerous. Since so many of your body’s tissues, hormones and all of its cells are dependent on a good supply of essential fats, a low-fat regime undermines your overall health. And it doesn’t enhance your good looks – those fatty acid deficiencies also cause your body to age prematurely. Read the rest of this entry »

Your menus will be made up exclusively of foods and drinks chosen from good-quality protein sources and low glycaemic index, low- density carbohydrates, plus the very best fats. Let’s look at protein first.
Fish – all kinds of fresh and canned fish including bass, trout, sole, sardines, herring, mackerel, salmon, tuna, terakihi, dory.
Shellfish – mussels (the green-lipped variety are best), calamari, oysters, clams, crayfish, lobster, crabs. Read the rest of this entry »

Because rice is the dominating carbohydrate source in Asian diets, its glycaemic index determines to a large degree the overall glycaemic index of the Asian-style eating pattern. As readers of The Glucose Revolution will already be aware, rice varies markedly in its G.I. depending on the variety. Most rice consumed in Britain has a high G.I., while Basmati rice from India and the rice eaten in Japan have a low G.I. Read the rest of this entry »

When weight loss is all you care about, it makes sense to follow a weight-loss diet. But whenever you go on a diet, it’s inevitable you’ll go off it sooner or later. A diet may help you lose weight, but it’s only a temporary solution to a permanent problem: your potential for overeating. Read the rest of this entry »

The scientific evidence for exercise in weight loss—particularly in very big people—is surprisingly equivocal. This could be because the net value of exercise has been over-estimated, say United States exercise specialists Glen and Arlene Blix. Read the rest of this entry »

The term ‘natural‘ is often used as a marketing tool—as if manufacturers are doing us a favour by allowing food to remain in its normal state. Yet ‘natural‘ doesn’t always imply `better‘, particularly when it comes to high-energy foods. Read the rest of this entry »

Potato crisp manufacturers have tried to jump on the health bandwagon through the introduction of ‘light’ and ‘lightly salted’ varieties. Some of these, such as the ‘Kettle chip’, were criticised by nutritionists for their use of saturated fats such as palm oils, which are thought to increase cholesterol levels in the bloodstream. But manufacturers have been quick to counter, using claims such as ‘no cholesterol‘ and ‘no tropical oils’. Read the rest of this entry »

Once thought to be a main cause of obesity, starchy foods are now thought to have just the opposite effect. But not all starches are the same, says Professor Alison Stephens, an expert in carbohydrate metabolism from the University of Satkatchewan in Canada. ‘The re-emergence of starchy foods, (or non-fibre complex carbohydrates) and their influence in health is making the interest in fibre a little old fashioned’, says Stephens. Fibre is the part of carbohydrate that resists breakdown by enzymes in the intestine. Most fibre passes straight through to the large bowel ready for excretion in the faeces. Thus you can eat fibre without absorbing the energy from it. Read the rest of this entry »

The winning partnership of carrots with coriander makes a wonderfully hearty and healthy soup, but it also makes a great breakfast drink. Here’s a quick way to get all the benefits of this often taken-for-granted vegetable and the fabulously peppery taste of fresh coriander, which is available year-round in most supermarkets these days. This drink takes just minutes to make, and it’s full of fibre, vitamins, and minerals. As well as being filling (but without loads of calories), it give your blood a boost, too. Drink Caffeine Cautiously
How caffeine affects your weight loss can vary. Some people can continue to drink a couple of cups of coffee or a caffeinated beverage every day and have great success on a low-dieting weight-loss program. Others may find that it slows down progress.
Caffeine all by itself, even without cream and sugar, can stimulate the production of insulin because it can indirectly raise blood glucose levels by stimulating the release of glycogen stores. And, as stated previously, this can increase fat storage and thwart fat burning. Read the rest of this entry »

Nothing can be done about your age, so don’t worry about it. You simply are the age you are, and yes, your metabolism slows down accordingly. But all is not lost. You can rev up your metabolism in spite of your age, no matter what age you are. Here’s what to do beyond eating the low-dieting way.
Avoid Overeating
Low-dieting weight loss only works to the extent that you don’t overeat. When you overeat, your body’s insulin levels become elevated and your body starts storing fat. Read the rest of this entry »

Although some people can keep their metabolism high throughout their lives, most can’t. Certain biological factors are, well, facts of life. After a person’s biological prime, say at about age 30 or 35, the body’s hormonal system begins to slow down and continues slowing down with every passing decade. As hormone production slows, so, too, does the basal metabolic rate. Read the rest of this entry »

The structure of cellulite tissue differs considerably in structure and chemical composition from normal fat. It also tends to develop in stages:
Normal Flesh — Skin on your thighs and buttocks is smooth when you are standing or lying down. When pinched it folds and furrows but does not pit or bulge. This is the normal skin of most lean and very healthy men and women. Read the rest of this entry »

If you’ve been on a restricted-calorie diet before, you know how hard it is to avoid overeating when you feel hungry all the time. Throw in the sudden and unexpected food cravings that can make a mess of your best intentions, and it’s easy to see why staying on a restricted-calorie diet is agonizingly difficult and certainly not fun. On a dieting index weight-loss program, however, it is easier to avoid both overeating and the horrendous, and at times irresistible, food cravings. That kind of hunger is induced by the restrictive nature of those diets. Read the rest of this entry »
