Dieting tips, What’s Slowing Your Metabolism?
Although some people can keep their metabolism high throughout their lives, most can’t. Certain biological factors are, well, facts of life. After a person’s biological prime, say at about age 30 or 35, the body’s hormonal system begins to slow down and continues slowing down with every passing decade. As hormone production slows, so, too, does the basal metabolic rate.
With a slower metabolism, the body naturally increases fat storage while slowing down the production of muscle mass. As a person gains more body fat, metabolism slows down further, creating a cycle that keeps metabolism low and fat storage high. The reason your body does this is because it takes more energy, or calories, to maintain a pound of muscle than a pound of fat. So if we compare two women who are the same height, weight, and age, the woman who has a body fat percentage of 25 percent will typically have a higher metabolism than the woman who has a body fat percentage of 35 percent. Quite simply, lower body fat percentage translates into a higher metabolism. So one goal for increasing your metabolism is to increase your muscle mass and decrease your body fat percentage.
A diet high in carbohydrates—especially one high in high-dieting carbohydrates—increases insulin levels. Excess insulin stores excess blood sugar as fat. Too much insulin increases a person’s fat stores and body fat percentage, eventually slowing metabolism.
Fortunately, the opposite is also true. When you eat the low-dieting way, your body produces less insulin. When insulin levels are low, your body isn’t storing fat. A low-dieting weight-loss program uses up its own stored fat for energy, so your body fat percentage drops, your metabolism rises, and you lose weight!
