Dieting, what makes me Overeat?
- I’m bored in the afternoon
- My mum or dad yells at me
- I fight with my sister or friends
- School homework is too hard
- It makes me feel good
- There are a lot of goodies in the house V I have a bad day or I’m stressed
- My friends eat and don’t gain weight V Life’s not fair
- No one understands me
You probably aren’t going to come up with all your reasons in one day. When they will come to mind is when you’re diving into the last of the ice-cream. Like all the lists that you worked on earlier, this one can be added to and altered as your life changes.
So now you have some idea of why you snack. It’s great to know what’s wrong, but if we don’t have a solution to fix it, the information is useless. Some problems I can’t help you with. If you have an unhappy home situation, you need to talk to someone who can help you. However, if the reason you snack uncontrollably is from boredom, loneliness, anger, or frustration, I may be able to give you some suggestions.
This time I want you to think of things you like to do. Remember your goal board? Maybe you can get ideas from there. List at least ten activities that you enjoy or would like to learn. When you are tempted by biscuits, cakes, and ice-cream, what else could you do that you would enjoy doing just as much? You don’t want to wait until the chocolate is calling you. You need a plan in advance.
If you know you are likely to be bored tomorrow afternoon, think of something you can start before the boredom hits. But sometimes you don’t know you are going to be cross or feel unloved. Then it is even more important to have some ideas for things that could make you feel better. Need some suggestions? How about: calling a friend, listening to music, dancing, playing tennis, walking the dog, getting a video, doing a jigsaw together, playing a game, reading a magazine, taking a bubble bath, going to a film, window shopping, riding your bike, cleaning your room, or planning a trip?
When you snack, it is probably more important to control your overeating than it is to count each and every calorie; however, calories are important. So, if you are seriously watching those numbers, look at the chart below for some snacks that are under 100 calories.
