Get Up and Go
Here is a start-the-day juice with a vengeance. Make sure you choose the ripest-possible tomatoes, as that’s when they’re at their most nutritious. Most people don’t realize that tomatoes are a member of the Solanaceae family, which includes potatoes, peppers, and aubergines: they’re all relatives of the nightshades. For this reason, this juice is not ideal for anyone with rheumatoid arthritis, though it’s not a problem if you have osteoarthritis. To make it, stir the kelp powder (you can find it in most good health-food shops) into the juice just before drinking.
Serves 1-2
4 medium tomatoes
30g or loz fresh root ginger 2 celery sticks, with leaves
1 small sweet potato, unpeeled
2 tsp kelp powder
1 Wash the first four ingredients and put them through a juicer.
2 Mix the juice well.
3 Stir in the kelp powder.
Vital statistics and low carb low-down
Although they’re starchy, sweet potatoes are nutritionally valuable. This drink is super-rich in vitamin C, betacarotene, lycopene, and iodine, and also contain potassium and folic acid. As well as all the protective benefits of the carotenoids and vitamin C, this juice also contains some coumarin compounds from the celery, which pep up the entire circulatory system, boost the protective function of white cells, and lower blood pressure. The kelp powder is rich in iodine, which stimulates the thyroid and gets your body working in overdrive.
Just what you need at the start of the day!
