For many years I wondered why after childhood most of us no longer experience that glorious explosive, rhythmical freedom and energy, grounded in the physical body. Why do we often feel only half alive?

And why do us women tend to look upon our bodies as something separate from ourselves, to be criticised, judged, or pushed and shoved into shape, instead of celebrated for their power and joy in movement. For too many human beings, the primary experience of life is one of lifelessness. And since none of us is able to live with this dead feeling for long, we are forced to seek extreme stimuli – drugs, alcohol, compulsive work or sex – just to make us feel alive again. The trouble is, none of these ever seems to work for very long. Where does the real key lie?
The answer to this question may surprise you. It stunned me when I first came upon it, because it is so simple. The key to aliveness is found in the body itself. It lies in muscle. When the engine of your muscle is at work, you’re turning food calories into energy, burning fat – and creating a feeling of ongoing, simple joy. Muscle creates the life energy for you to think, to move and to feel. To create a firm, beautiful, lean body for yourself, begin to listen to, nurture and develop your muscle. The better your muscle, the greater your sense of being alive.
Our bodies are made up of two basic components – lean body mass (LBM), which encompasses muscle tissue, and fat Lean body mass is the part of you which is most alive. It consists of organs such as the heart, the liver, the pancreas, bones and skin, as well as your muscle tissue. Your LBM demands oxygen, uses nutrients from your food, thinks and feels, moves, grows and repairs itself. Wild animals have a high percentage of LBM. That is what gives them their power, their ease of movement, their stamina and their sleek bodies.
The rest of you is fat. The hardest thing to understand for most of us who have been brainwashed by low-calorie slimming nonsense is that it is your body’s fat stores that need dealing with, not your weight as measured by the scales.
Fat tissue is very different from muscle. It does not need oxygen, does not create movement or activity, and cannot repair itself. In fact, body fat is just about as close as you can get to dead flesh within a living system.
Finding Yourself
With the X Factor Diet it is the muscle portion of your LBM you will be working with, through both dietary change and exercise. For it is your LBM that transforms your shape and energy. It is a fascinating metamorphosis to go through. It does not alter you in any intrinsic way, nor does it turn you into someone else’s idea of the perfect body. It only makes you what, in essence, you really are. What happens is that your LBM slowly but inexorably begins to transform your body – which may have become distorted over the years by stress, poor eating and lack of movement – into the true form that is hidden within it. People sometimes talk about the body as if it were a machine. In reality, it’s nothing like a machine. A machine wears out.
By now, thousands of research projects have been carried out into the effects of exercise on health, leanness and age prevention. The conclusions are unequivocal. If there is one thing which improves insulin sensitivity, energy, emotional balance and a capacity for experiencing simple joy in life, it is regular exercise. Our ancestors were in continual movement. They trekked long distances in search of food. They ran in short bursts when hunting animals and being hunted. Simple walking took up a large part of the day.
A New Attitude
If you consider exercise a chore – something you are ’supposed’ to do even though you hate every moment of it – it’s time to shift the way you think. In fact, why not get rid of the word ‘exercise‘ and replace it with ‘physical activity’, on the understanding that the more you use your body, the more power, energy and expansiveness of spirit you experience in your day-to-day to life. When you begin to think of movement as physical activity instead of exercise, you may find you can make a lot more space for it in your life. Once you do, the benefits are almost boundless.
