Muscle building, Sugar will not make you too Muscular
As I reveal this information, I can imagine women readers squirming uneasily at the mention of building muscle. Rest assured that when I speak of muscle building by eating carbohydrates I do not mean muscle bulking. Even if you were to eat two whole loaves of bread a day, you would not turn into the Incredible Hulk. It’s entirely feasible that a man will become more impressively muscular on such a regime, but a woman will not. This is because we women are blessed with oestrogen, a female hormone that prevents the muscles from growing too bulky. (Obviously, this does not apply if you’re doing two hours of heavy weight-lifting a day for months on end!)
By eating plenty of carbohydrates, you will achieve denser muscles, but your muscles won’t look any bigger. Compare a box of feathers to a box of lead pellets. They both take up exactly the same amount of space, but the lead is a great deal more dense than the feathers. Because your carbohydrate-rich diet will increase your muscle density, you will probably end up weighing more, although you will not be any bigger. However, your capacity for burning up energy (including fats!) will have increased significantly. You will also have more tone, and feel firmer and more toned as your weight increases. The result? You will weigh slightly more, but you will look thinner, tighter and smaller.
Aim for heavy and slim
I admit that it can seem discouraging to climb onto the scale after a few weeks on the X Diet and to discover that you’ve gained a kilogram. At this point, you might like to turn back and read the section ‘Heavy and thin’again.
The aim of the X Diet is to decrease your body fat and increase your muscle mass. Remember that no one cares about how much you weigh – they only care about how you look. So don’t worry about what the scale says – it’s the centimetres that count.
Repeat this mantra over and over again until you are comfortablewith it:
* ‘I want to be heavy and slim.’
* ‘I want to be heavy and slim.’
* ‘I want to be heavy and slim.’
And remember: the heavier your muscle mass, the more efficiently your body will be able to burn up the food that you eat. This means that you will be able to eat more in the future, because you will have a higher metabolic rate.
