Sweet potatoes mash clown to a naturally creamy consistency without the need to add extra butter or milk. They are also more nutritious than white potatoes as the orange flesh contains lots of antioxidant vitamins like beta-carotene and vitamin E, although normal spuds can be used instead.

When choosing beans, some of the organic brands of baked beans are sweetened with a little apple juice instead of sugar and have fewer additives. Failing that, go for bog- standard beans, not the ones with no added sugar, as these contain artificial sweeteners and fillers that can be even more harmful than sugar. Prick the sausages with a fork before cooking so that the excess fat will drip out while they cook.

• 8 good-quality sausages with a high meat content, pricked (choose gluten-free ones without breadcrumbs or cereal fillers, if necessary)
• 2 medium-large sweet potatoes, peeled and finely sliced 2 carrots, peeled and finely sliced
• 1 tsp Marigold Reduced Salt Vegetable Bouillon powder, or sea salt to taste
• 2 x 410g (i41/2oz) cans baked beans or 1 quantity of Big Baked Beans, to serve 4
• freshly ground black pepper

1 Grill or oven-cook the sausages according to the packet instructions.

2 Meanwhile, steam the sweet potato and carrot for about 12-15 minutes, or until soft, before mashing together. Season lightly with the bouillon powder or the sea salt and keep warm while you heat up the beans.
