Vegetable and Plants Fats

October 1st, 2008

The fats that come from plants are called oils because they are fluid, not hard. In general, plant fats are better for your heart than animal fats because they are mostly unsaturated and barely contain cholesterol.

For the purposes of the X Diet, however, all oils are to be regarded as fats. The body, after all, does not distinguish between fats — it can’t tell whether the fat comes from a pig or a plant, and frankly it doesn’t care. A fat is a fat, and the body reacts to plant fats in the same way as it does to animal fats — it deposits them on the belly and thighs.

Unfortunately, this means that you should not eat any plant oils at all. Clearly this means that fried foods are completely forbidden.

Healthy Dieting

Also beware of imported products. In the United States, for example, oils are sometimes not regarded as ‘fats‘. An American product whose label says ‘fat free’ or ‘non fat’ may not contain any animal fats, but could be loaded with vegetable oils!

Oils, margarine and mayonnaise

On the X Diet, you will need to eliminate all the following oils from your diet:

all other vegetable oils

Many of my patients react in horror when I give them this list, exclaiming, Tut I’ve been told for years and years that olive oil is so good for me!’ Yes, this is true. Like fish oils, olive oil is a healthy alternative to animal fats because it does not worsen cholesterol problems in people with familial hypercholesterolaemia. However, as I stressed earlier, just because a food is regarded as `healthy’ doesn’t mean it’s healthy for all diseases.

Hidden fats

Beware the lurking enemy!

The fat content of all these foods — whether it’s plant fat or animal fat — is not immediately apparent to the consumer. But all these products contain hidden fat, and they should be avoided on the X Diet:

  • bran muffins chocolate
  • cream crackers crisps
  • digestive biscuits
  • health bars
  • instant soups (even slimmer’s soups) pates and spreads
  • pastries
  • popcorn (unless you know it has been air-popped)
  • scones
  • snack bars
  • tinned soups
  • cakes
  • coffee creamer cream dressings croissants
  • Greek salads
  • hot cross buns ‘lite’ mayonnaise muesli
  • pies

Oven-baked `chips’

If you have a liking for chips, try this delicious fat-free cooking method. Wash some potatoes thoroughly and cut into chip-size pieces or small wedges (don’t peel the potatoes — the skin is good for you!). Mix together tomato sauce and a little vinegar in a bowl, then dip the chips into this mixture. Place on baking sheet and bake at 180 °C until golden brown and crisp (about 30 minutes).

Sausage substitutes

If you can’t imagine life without sausages, try this wonderful alternative. Ask your butcher to mince skinless, deboned chicken breasts, to mix them with spices and rusk (sausage cereal) and to put them into sausage skins to make extra-lean chippolatas. Or try ostrich meat boerewors, made exactly the same way using lean ostrich fillet. Please remember, however, that these sausages still contain a small amount of fat and that, like chicken breasts, they should be eaten occasionally and in small portions.
