Weight Loss Blockers
Before you embark on your low-dieting weight-loss program, you need to know that some medical conditions could prevent or stall your progress. If any of these apply to you, be sure to check with your doctor for advice.
Medications
Some prescription and over-the-counter medications can prevent or stall weight loss. They increase a person’s metabolic resistance. These include the following:
- Steroids such as prednisone and, to a lesser degree, asthma inhalers
- Some anticonvulsants
- Some antidepressants
- Some hormone-replacement therapy drugs
- Some birth control pills
- Insulin and insulin-stimulating drugs
Not all drugs in the previous categories work the same way. If you suspect that your medication is thwarting your weight-loss efforts, talk with your doctor or pharmacist about other options. Discuss alternative choices, such as using nutritional supplements or lifestyle changes, to help you eliminate the need for these medications.
As you experience success with your dieting index weight-loss program, your need for some medications, such as those for high blood pressure, may decrease or be eliminated.
Yeast Infections
Chronic Candida albicans, or yeast infections, can prevent weight loss. Everyone’s body contains both beneficial bacteria and yeast. It’s only when the balance between the two is disrupted that a person’s yeast overgrows to the point of a yeast infection. Yeast infections include such symptoms as rashes that itch, vaginitis, ringworm, athlete’s foot, thrush, nail infections, and jock itch.
Yeast overgrowth can increase appetite, especially for sweets and high-dieting carbs, which can result in weight gain. Those food cravings make it hard to follow a weight- loss program.
Often yeast infections are caused by the overuse of antibiotics, which have destroyed all the body’s beneficial bacteria. Eliminating a yeast infection will help you lose weight. Many natural solutions can work. Try these suggestions:
Take an acidophilus supplement that contains bifidobacterium and bulgaricus. If you are sensitive to dairy, use a supplement that doesn’t contain milk cultures. Take as directed.
Mix up a powdered “greens” drink in water twice a day and drink. The drink can help produce an alkaline-ash effect and is filled with an abundance of beneficial phytonutrients, minerals, and vitamins. Yeast flourishes in an acidic environment, so by making the body slightly alkaline, the yeast dies off. Nutritionists frequently advocate that having a slightly alkaline body is healthier. You’ll find “greens” drink mixes at the health food store.
You can find other solutions for yeast infections at health-food stores. And if these suggestions don’t work for you, you can also contact your health-care provider.
Low Thyroid
Your thyroid gland regulates your metabolism. If it’s not functioning correctly, you could have metabolic resistance to weight loss due to a low thyroid. Other symptoms include lethargy and fatigue, depression, sensitivity to cold, dry skin, chronic constipation, hair loss, poor memory, or elevated cholesterol levels.
If you suspect you have an under-functioning thyroid, ask your doctor for a thyroid test to evaluate your T3, T4, and TSH levels. If they’re low, you may need a prescription for a thyroid hormone.
The Least You Need to Know
Metabolic resistance is corrected through low-dieting eating and lifestyle changes.
Use strength training and aerobic exercise as ways to boost your basal metabolic rate.
Increase your overall daily activity level.
Make sure you get a good night’s sleep most nights to keep you metabolism high.
A low thyroid hormone, yeast overgrowth, and some medications can stall or prevent weight loss.
