Weights Have It

November 21st, 2009

Where aerobic exercise strengthens the heart and lungs, weight training goes far beyond. In the past five years an enormous number of studies have been carried out where the health of people in all age groups has been assessed before and after weight training. The results are amazing. They show that working out with dumbbells and barbells, or using the weight-training equipment you find in gyms, not only strengthens joints and increases muscle mass. It also raises the levels of growth hormone, as well as preventing and reversing osteoporosis. And it increases your bone density no matter what your age. Weight training improves just about everything in your life.

As long as you leave enough recovery time between sessions, the more weight training you do on the same body parts, the more you increase your lean-body-mass-to-fat ratio. Far from making you musclebound, it will make you leaner. Many people who begin to do weight training find that they gain weight, although they have lost size. When they get dressed they discover their clothes have become loose, and that they have got rid of all the bulges that they have never been able to tackle. It often clears cellulite – provided, of course, that you cut out the high-carbohydrate junk foods in your diet. The more muscle mass you build, the more energy-burning factories you create in your cells, which in turn increases your metabolic rate. You are able to burn fuel for energy and lay down less fat, until eventually you can eat more than you are eating now, and never get fat.

To promote fat loss, weight training should always be done on an empty stomach. This way you use up the glycogen in your body quickly, and then turn to fat burning for energy.
