The real way to ‘cleanse’

I do not hold with fasts or ‘detoxifying’ diets. If you are feeling sluggish, run-down or ‘clogged up’, then the only way to remedy these sensations is to make your body work more quickly and more efficiently. Here are some tips:

  • Try to empty your bowels at least twice a day. To do this, you need to eat large quantities of fresh fruit and vegetables. If you follow the X Diet to the letter, you will not have any difficulty achieving this goal!
  • Eat plenty of carbohydrates. If you are giving your body enough energy in the form of carbohydrates, your liver will not need to switch into ‘overdrive’ and start converting precious muscle into energy.
  • Drink copious amounts of water. This will prevent strain on the kidneys and allow them to rid themselves easily of wastes.
  • Avoid drinks that have a diuretic effect, such as alcohol, tea, coffee, cool drinks and energy drinks. Although these are all permitted on the X Diet, it’s wise not to drink them until you have first downed your thrice-daily water quota. In this way, you can ensure that you always remain adequately hydrated.

Water retention

Healthy DietingIf your body has been dehydrated for a while, you might notice that you retain a little water as you start this regimen. But don’t worry. This will soon correct itself when the kidneys begin ‘waking up’ to the steady stream of water coming in after every meal. When the sluice gates finally open, you will begin urinating rather often — at least for a period of time. This process is called diuresis. Very simply, this is a sign that your kidneys now feel that it’s ’safe’ to let go of the water because there’s no risk of the body being drained of water again. Do persevere, because after a while the kidneys will settle into an easier rhythm.

Taking diuretics to try and force your kidneys to expel water from the body is definitely not the way to go (unless your kidneys are weak or damaged, in which case your doctor will advise you). To illustrate this point, let me tell you a story: the sun and the wind were arguing about who was the more powerful. As a test, they decided to see who could be the first to steal the coat of a man walking along the road. The wind started to blow and the man’s coat started flapping. The man gathered his coat around him tightly. The harder the wind blew, the more tightly he held onto his coat. Eventually the wind gave up. The sun, who was watching, smiled and said calmly, ‘You cannot make him take off his coat. You must make him want to take it off.’ The sun shone his long, hot rays down on the man, who promptly unbuttoned his coat and took it off.

This is how the kidneys work. You can’t continually force them to let go of excess water being retained by the body, because this will make them even more inclined to ‘hang on’ to it. The only way to get them functioning efficiently again is to drink the water your body needs.
