Why does stress cause obesity or make weight loss so difficult: continued

April 4th, 2009

Yet, being exposed to stress is normal and to be expected. After all, we’re living in a modern, pressurised and fast-paced society. The ‘fight-or-flight’ syndrome is a natural process, part of our innate physical survival skills when in a physical crisis. The health and weight troubles start in everyday life when we are exposed to pressure and stress and our emotional responses to those situations are so intense that our bodies register them as life threatening. Remember the internal dialogue mentioned earlier, the “It’s a matter of life and death that I reach my sales target this week”? Or the “Stress is killing me!” that we use so often? Well, these statements are reflections of our emotions; emotions to which the pituitary gland responds by calling on those hormones for physical assistance.

It is important to realise that the pituitary gland does not know the source of the stress that triggers your emotions. When your emotions run high with fear, insecurity, anger or frustration, the pituitary gland simply senses danger. That is all it takes to activate those chemicals that aid the fight-or-flight response. In real life, stress is experienced every single daily, often every hour. So the body’s response towards stress continues and the bloodstream is constantly filled with glucose, which is seldom fully utilised, because you are not physically fighting for your life. Most of the time you are simply doing mental and emotional baffle with life. Well, chances are you will physically lose the baffle. And you will probably be getting quite fat before that battle is lost!

Ultimately – after long periods of extreme stress and the inappropriate emotional response triggers they evoke – you could continue to experience high levels of stress hormones in your blood even after the stress has passed, This is because the pituitary sensors begin to ignore the fact that you have high levels of adrenaline (and eventually cortisol), and they stop indicating to the adrenal glands that there is enough, thank you very much. So they continue to release the hormones despite your stress levels having subsided. That is probably the reason why you find it so difficult to ’switch off’ after work, or even when you are on leave. Perhaps this is also why you are feeling so extremely tired, almost brain-dulled, why you often have sore and stiff joints and muscles and why you have constant food cravings and regular mood swings. Perhaps it is also why you complain about being forgetful? Chances are you’re still high on stress hormones long after the stress has been relieved. Until the next time …

As usually happens when our intricate physiology is threatened, there’s more to contend with: because of years of stress and the way in which the excessive stress hormones operate, your body is probably resisting the insulin, which is supposed to make all that excess blood sugar available as energy. It either can’t or won’t use the insulin. So what does it do? Well, instead of breaking down (and using!) the excess energy (glucose), it simply starts storing it as fat and starts breaking down your good muscle tissue, using that lovely protein in your muscles for energy. And need I repeat this again? By losing muscle tissue, your metabolic rate decreases permanently and also (further) upsets your fat-to-muscle ratio, making weight gain so much easier and successful and permanent weight loss so much harder.

This, in a nutshell, is the rather simplistic explanation of stress‘ influence on your body fat and on your overall weight. Much as I’d like to tell you differently, I can’t. Believe me, stress could very much lie at the heart of your chronic, spiralling obesity and your inability to shed the excess weight.
